From August 15, 2025, private car owners in India will be able to use a new FASTag Annual Pass that has been launched by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The pass will cost ₹3,000 and facilitate smoother, cheaper movement on national highways for cars, jeeps, and vans.
What is the New FASTag Annual Plan?
MoRTH has formally announced the introduction of this annual toll payment mechanism for non-commercial private vehicles. According to this scheme, customers are charged a flat rate of ₹3,000 for either a year of highway usage or 200 toll trips—whichever is achieved first. For frequent users, this change has the potential to significantly reduce toll charges from almost ₹10,000 annually to ₹3,000. On average, this reduces the toll cost per trip to around ₹15, which is a significant saving for repeat drivers.
Where to Get and Renew the Pass
Beginning August 15, users will be able to buy or renew the FASTag Annual Pass from various official sources. Some of these sources include the Highway Travel mobile application, the NHAI website (www.nhai.gov.in), and the MoRTH website (www.morth.nic.in). These mediums provide simple digital access and rapid renewals for users across the country.
Is a New FASTag Needed?
If you already possess a valid FASTag, there’s no requirement to buy a new one. Provided that it is properly installed on your vehicle, registered under a valid number, and not blacklisted, the current FASTag can be utilized to activate the annual pass. This makes life easier and prevents unnecessary buybacks.
Where Will the Pass Be Valid?
The FASTag Annual Pass will be readable at all toll plazas of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). It can only be used on national highways and is only meant for private, non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. It will not cover state highways or privately operated toll roads unless stated separately. For the most up-to-date list of eligible toll booths, users are encouraged to refer to the Highway Travel app or the NHAI website.
Who Can Use This Pass?
This plan is only for private vehicle users. Non-commercial vehicles only like cars, jeeps, and vans are eligible. Commercial vehicles like taxis, buses, and trucks are not covered under this scheme. This differentiation ensures that the pass is aimed at regular individual commuters and not business transport.
