Pension Scheme: Nowadays, everyone worries about their old age. With rising inflation and expenses, people want to avoid financial hardship, as they might otherwise face many challenges later in life. The Central Government operates the Atal Pension Yojana for the elderly, which can prove to be an excellent option. Notably, this scheme allows you to receive a pension to cover expenses in old age, even without having held a government job.

This scheme is particularly ideal for residents of rural areas. By making small, periodic contributions, you can secure a monthly pension of ₹5,000 after reaching the age of 60. This highly trusted Government of India scheme is designed for individuals in the unorganised sector. Let us explore the scheme details, rules, and application process.

About the Atal Pension Yojana

The Atal Pension Yojana is a social security scheme supported by the Central Government and managed by the PFRDA. Its primary objective is to ensure a fixed monthly income for you once you cross the age of 60 and no longer have a source of earnings.

How is the monthly income received?

Under this scheme, you are guaranteed a monthly pension for life—ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 (specifically ₹1,000, ₹2,000, ₹3,000, or ₹5,000)—upon attaining the age of 60.

What determines the pension amount?

Your monthly premium is determined based on two factors: the desired monthly pension amount and the age at which you begin investing. The earlier you start investing in this scheme, the lower your premium payments will be.

Greater Benefits at a Younger Age

If you are 18 years old and wish to receive a monthly pension of ₹5,000 upon reaching the age of 60, you need to contribute only ₹210 per month—effectively ₹7 per day. In contrast, if a person joins the scheme at the age of 30, they must contribute ₹577 per month to secure the same ₹5,000 pension.

Who Can Avail the Benefits?

The government has set simple eligibility criteria for availing the benefits of the Atal Pension Yojana. The applicant must be an Indian citizen aged between 18 and 40 years. The applicant must possess an active bank account linked to their Aadhaar card and mobile number. Income tax payers are not eligible to avail the benefits of this scheme.

Key Rules of the Atal Pension Yojana

The Atal Pension Yojana is not limited to the subscriber’s lifetime; it also provides security for the family. If the pensioner dies, their spouse continues to receive the same monthly pension. If both the subscriber and their spouse pass away, the accumulated corpus is returned to the nominee as a lump-sum amount.
