When should Sundarkand be recited?

What is the method of reciting the Sundarkand?

After bathing in the morning, offer prayers to the Sun God. After this, install the idol of Hanumanji on a platform. Light a lamp of pure ghee. Offer a garland of flowers and vermillion to Hanumanji. After this, begin reciting the Sundarkand as per the prescribed rituals.

Upon completion of the Sunderkand recitation, perform an aarti (sacred prayer) for Lord Hanuman and recite the Hanuman Chalisa. Finally, offer offerings of jaggery, gram, boondi laddus, imarti, and fruits to Lord Hanuman. Distribute the offerings among the people.

Rules for Sunderkand Recitation

  1. One should wear clean clothes while reciting the Sunderkand and avoid black clothing.
  2. One should not argue with anyone.
  3. One should not harbour negative thoughts about anyone.
  4. One should not consume tamasic substances.
  5. Reciting the Sunderkand during Brahmamuhurta is considered auspicious.
  6. One should never leave the recitation of the Sunderkand incomplete. According to belief, not completing the recitation of the Sunderkand may deprive one of auspicious results.
  7. Sunderkand should not be recited on the new moon day.
