What is the religious significance of Chhath Puja?
Chhath Puja is celebrated on a grand scale in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. This day is dedicated to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya and is a four-day grand festival. Standing in water at sunrise and sunset, offerings are made to the Sun God. Prosperity and long life for children are also prayed for.
How is Chhath Puja celebrated?
- Chhath Puja begins with Nahay Khay. On the first day, the fasting person eats pure and sattvik food.
- Kharna is celebrated on the second day. On this day, the devotee observes a waterless fast for the entire day, and in the evening, jaggery kheer and fruits are offered to the Sun God and Chhathi Maiya.
- On the third day, at sunset, water is offered to the Sun God while standing on the riverbank. A waterless fast is observed on this day as well.
- After that, on the fourth day, water is offered to the Sun God in the morning, and then the devotee breaks her fast. Cleanliness is highly emphasised during this fast.
