The government has clarified that these websites have no connection with IRCTC or any other government agency. Apart from this, the conmen have also created many more domains like irctc-heliyatra.com.
All these websites are being run by the same syndicate, whose three members were recently arrested by the police. The special thing is that these fake websites often appear on the first page of Google search through sponsored results, so that people click on them easily. Therefore, relying only on the top results of search engines can also be dangerous.
How do cybercriminals target people?
The method of this cyber fraud is quite systematic and clever. At first, the conmen create fake websites that look like official portals. They then promote these websites through paid ads on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and Google. When a devotee clicks on the advertisement or search result, he is redirected to a WhatsApp number. There a person talks to them, sends them helicopter fares, packages and booking links.
After winning the trust, the devotee makes the payment, and gets the e-ticket. But when he reaches the helipad, he finds out that he has been cheated. The police have received more than 30 complaints so far, in which a fraud of about 10 lakh rupees has been revealed. That is, caution should be exercised while booking online for any religious yatra - be it Amarnath, Kedarnath, Badrinath or any other yatra.
