Aadhaar Update: If you have young children at home and have not yet obtained an Aadhaar card for them, this information is crucial for you. For children, an Aadhaar card is more than just an identity document; it is required for various purposes. The UIDAI has highlighted how having an accurate record of a child’s identity can be instrumental in reuniting them with their family during difficult times.
The UIDAI has now extended the deadline for the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for children, which is required for their Aadhaar, and it remains free of charge. You can now complete the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) for your children at no cost until September 30, 2027. Please ensure that you get the update done for your child on time.
Timely Aadhaar enrolment and the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) play a vital role in ensuring the accurate identification of children. This Aadhaar-related initiative can be instrumental in reuniting missing children with their families, helping them return to the love and care of their people. This small step is a great hope for reuniting children with their loved ones.

Aadhaar has posted a video on the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), in which PM Modi explains why the biometric update for children is so important. With the help of Aadhaar, more than 644 missing children and individuals have already been reunited with their families. This was only possible because they had obtained an Aadhaar card for their children and completed the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) at the ages of 5 and 15. Therefore, it is strongly advised that parents ensure their children undergo the Mandatory Biometric Update (MBU) at the ages of 5 and 15.

Extended Deadline: September 30, 2027
According to the latest UIDAI guidelines, this exemption was previously valid until September 30, 2026; however, it has now been extended until September 30, 2027. Previously, biometric updates were free only for children aged 5 to 7 and 15 to 17. Now, the ‘Mandatory Biometric Update’ (MBU) for all children aged 5 to 17 can be completed free of charge until 30 September 2027.
Why is a biometric update necessary?
When an Aadhaar card is created for a young child, their biometrics are recorded differently. Once the child reaches the age of 5, a full set of biometric data is collected. This includes taking a new photograph, recording fingerprints for all fingers, and scanning the irises of both eyes. This data is then updated in the child’s Aadhaar record.
Does the Aadhaar number change after the update?
The child’s Aadhaar number does not change following a mandatory biometric update; the original 12-digit Aadhaar number remains the same. According to the UIDAI, a ‘de-duplication’ process is also carried out during the update at age 5. While the procedure is similar to that of a new registration, the child’s existing Aadhaar number remains unchanged.
