Ration Card Update: If you are a beneficiary of the government’s ration scheme, the way you receive your rations will change in the future. The central government is working towards digitizing and modernizing the Public Distribution System (PDS). The aim is to ensure that people do not face any difficulties in receiving their rations and that the system becomes more transparent.
It is being said on social media that free rations will be stopped, but this is absolutely not true. The government is not stopping rations, but is considering changing the method of distribution to provide better facilities to the people.

e-RUPI as an alternative for rations
The government is working on a plan to provide e-RUPI digital vouchers instead of distributing grains. Testing of this system has already begun in some cities, such as Chandigarh. In this system, a digital code will be sent to the beneficiary’s mobile phone. By showing this code, they will be able to buy rations of their choice and need from the market. The biggest advantage of this will be that people will be freed from long queues at ration shops, poor quality grains, and the arbitrary practices of shopkeepers.
₹1000 may be given every month
In some states, there is a discussion about providing cash assistance of approximately ₹1000 every month directly to the bank accounts of ration card holders. The objective is to enable families to buy not only wheat and rice, but also pulses, oil, milk, and other nutritious items.
Along with this, in states like Delhi, preparations are being made to send the amount for free gas cylinders directly to bank accounts, which could be around ₹853.

Who will benefit?
This new system will benefit those who come under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). This includes Antyodaya Anna Yojana cardholders, i.e., the poorest families. Priority Household (PHH) families are also included. Their annual income limit has now been increased to ₹1.20 lakh. It is important to note that the ration card must be linked to Aadhaar for this. The beneficiary’s bank account must also be active.
Will free rations be stopped?
No, the free ration scheme will not be stopped. The free grains provided under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana will continue as before. The government is offering the option of cash or e-RUPI only in those areas where there are difficulties in delivering rations or where people prefer to buy groceries from the market themselves.
