New Delhi: Amid discussions surrounding the US tariff policy, India has received some good news. President Donald Trump has reduced tariffs on products imported from India to the United States. He has announced the elimination of the 25 per cent additional penalty tariff.
According to the order issued by the White House, the total tariff on Indian imports will now be only 18 per cent. The tariff rates came into effect on February 7th, today. According to Indian time, the tariff was implemented at 10:30 AM. The 2 per cent additional ad valorem duty will no longer be levied on goods imported into the US. This will provide significant relief to Indian exporters to the United States. An increase in goods exported from India to the US may be seen in the coming days.

White House Order Applies to All Goods
The US decision to reduce tariffs on India applies to all goods that arrive in the United States for consumption on or after February 7, 2026. Exports from India after this date will not be subject to the additional percentage tariff. Only the normal import duty, which is approximately 18%, will be applied. The additional 25% tax will no longer be levied.
The special tariff codes created for this purpose have also been removed from the US tariff list. In simple terms, shipments arriving or cleared after this time will no longer be subject to the penalty tax. Only the normal import duty will be payable.

Relief Also Provided for Past Shipments
Relief has also been provided for shipments that have already arrived or are in transit and on which theper centcent extra tax has already been collected. The White House order clearly states that if US Customs has already collected the 25% additional tax, the amount will be refunded if necessary.
This refund will be processed under the normal procedures of US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Typically, the US importing company or its customs agent applies for the refund. Relations between the two countries will be strengthened.
It’s worth noting that a few days ago, Donald T had announced the imposition of tariffs on India, taking a tough stance against the Indian government. However, US President Donald Trump was continuously referring to Modi as his friend and praising him. His statements suggested that the tariffs might be reduced, which has now proven to be true.
Donald Trump has repeatedly urged India to distance itself from buying crude oil from Russia. However, India is a major importer of Russian oil.
