Mumbai BMC Election Result 2026 Updates: The BJP has swept the Maharashtra municipal elections, capturing the BMC and most other municipal corporations, decimating the opposition parties. The biggest losers in this election were the Thackeray brothers.
The duo of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde brought down the Shiv Sena’s seemingly impregnable fortress in the BMC, which it had held for 28 consecutive years. MNS chief Raj Thackeray suffered the most significant setback, with his party facing a crushing defeat. For the first time in its 45-year history, the BJP will have its own mayor in the BMC.

This has brought immense joy to the party workers and leadership. During the election campaign, both Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray and MNS’s Raj Thackeray put in their best efforts. While large crowds gathered to see the two brothers, this did not translate into votes.
BJP takes control of BMC
The most talked-about election in the Maharashtra municipal polls was that of the BMC, the world’s richest municipal corporation. The results for all 227 wards of the BMC have been declared. The BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 89 seats. Its alliance partner, the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), secured 29 seats.
In total, the BJP alliance won 118 seats. The MahaYuti needed a majority of 114 seats to elect a mayor. This means the MahaYuti has 4 seats more than the magic number for a majority. The BJP will soon announce the new mayor, and all eyes are on this announcement.

Kishori Pednekar was the outgoing mayor, whose term ended in 2022. During this period, Vishakha Raut, Nandu Satam, Hareshwar Patil, Mahadev Deole, Datta Dalvi, Shubha Raul, Shraddha Jadhav, Sunil Prabhu, Snehal Ambekar, and Vishwanath Mahadeshwar also served as mayors.
