If you are a driving license holder or a car owner, you must know about this. Because the government has recently given this urgent message. What problems will increase if you do not do this?
Roads The Ministry of Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has recently issued a nationwide guideline. It has been said that all vehicle owners, driving license holders and applicants should immediately update their registered mobile numbers on the Government Vehicle and Chariot Portal. The government has taken this initiative to ensure uninterrupted connectivity to a wide range of online transport services including vehicle registration, renewal, transfer of ownership, driving license application and permit-related transactions.

The initiative was created because India’s transportation system is transitioning to an online format with the Digital India Program, and it has become necessary for all owners or operators of vehicles as well as Licensed Drivers to have current and correct Contact Numbers. A majority of OTP (One-Time Password) Verification Attempts are unsuccessful because the mobile number has changed; as a result, people are not receiving fines timely and their requests are not being processed for an extensive period of time, causing hardship or inconvenience for countless people. The Ministry indicated that there are large numbers of individuals that have registered mobile numbers that they registered years ago before the creation of Mobile Telecommunications Technology and those numbers may no longer be active or in service. By updating this information, individuals will be able to access the services they require when they rely on our systems to make transactions and further enhance the security and reliability of the National Transport Database.
Why is it important to update your mobile number
The registered mobile number serves as the primary identifier for OTP-based verification and communication on both the Vahan (for vehicle-related services) and Sarathi (for driving license services) portals.

An incorrect or outdated phone number can lead to various issues, such as not being able to log in or complete transactions, failing to receive important alerts about expiry dates, traffic challans or regulatory changes, and delays in accessing e-services. Keeping records updated ensures seamless integration with other government platforms, increases data accuracy across the state, and helps in quick resolution of queries. This is also in line with the larger effort to make government services more efficient, secure, and user-friendly.
It is to be noted that owners of cars, SUVs, commercial vehicles, and two-wheelers (motorcycles and scooters) are required to update their mobile phone numbers on the government portal.
