PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme: The PM Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme aims to provide affordable and clean energy to ordinary families across the country. Under this scheme, solar panels are installed on the rooftops of houses, generating electricity at home. The government claims that this scheme can provide every family with up to 300 units of free electricity every month. This not only reduces electricity bills but also benefits the environment.

If the electricity generated by the solar panels exceeds the household’s needs, the surplus electricity can be sent to the government grid through net metering. In return, the electricity company pays the consumer. Thus, this scheme is not limited to saving electricity but also becomes a source of additional income.

How Much Will a Solar Plant Cost?
The government is offering attractive subsidies on the cost of solar plants under this scheme. For solar plants up to 2 kilowatts, the government provides 60 percent of the total cost as a subsidy. If a consumer installs a 3-kilowatt plant, a 40 percent subsidy is given on the additional 1 kilowatt. Typically, installing a 3-kilowatt solar plant costs around Rs. 1.5 lakh, of which approximately Rs. 90,000 is provided as a subsidy by the government.

Affordable Bank Loans for the Remaining Amount
Even after the subsidy, if raising the full amount is difficult, the government has provided the facility of affordable bank loans. Banks have been instructed to provide loans at an interest rate of only 0.5 percent above the repo rate. Currently, this means consumers can get loans at an interest rate of approximately 5.75 percent. This makes it much easier for middle and lower-income families to install solar plants.

The government has launched a National Consumer Portal for this scheme. Interested individuals can apply online through this portal. Several authorized solar vendors are already registered on the portal. Consumers can select a vendor according to their convenience and budget. After the solar panels are installed, the DISCOM company installs a net metering system at the consumer’s home. This clearly shows how much electricity was consumed at home and how much was sent back to the grid.

After the solar plant and net metering are completed, the DISCOM company uploads the certificate to the portal. Following this, the government transfers the subsidy amount directly to the consumer’s bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Typically, a 1 kW solar plant generates approximately 4 to 5 units of electricity daily. A 3 kW plant can generate about 15 units per day and approximately 450 units per month. By selling surplus electricity, it is possible to earn an additional income of up to Rs. 15,000 annually.
