E-Passport: The Government of India has launched the e-passport system under Passport Seva 2.0, updating passport services for the future. Now, upon obtaining a new passport or renewing an old one, citizens will receive a high-tech e-passport with a chip. This can be called a smart variant of the current paper passport.
It has been developed based on international security standards. Its purpose is to make identification more secure, prevent fraud, and speed up the immigration process at airports. This means that in the future, a passport will not only be a document but will also become a secure route for your digital identification. Learn how secure it will be and how you can apply for it.

How safe is e-passport?
The e-passport’s most significant feature is the microchip embedded within its cover. This chip securely stores the traveler’s digital photo, fingerprint, and other essential biometric information. This data is encrypted, making it extremely difficult to counterfeit or tamper with.
This will significantly curb passport fraud, fake identities, and illegal entry. Furthermore, the information will be instantly entered into the system upon scanning through e-gates at international airports, shortening immigration lines and making travel faster and easier than ever before.

How to apply for this?
Many people are wondering how to apply for it. If you currently have an old passport and it’s valid, there’s no need to replace it immediately. It will remain valid until its expiration date. You will receive an e-passport when you apply for a new passport or renewal.
The application process remains the same. You’ll need to fill out an online form on the Passport Seva Portal, schedule an appointment, and submit your documents for verification at the nearest center. Documents such as your Aadhaar card, birth certificate, and address proof will be required. Applicants must also have no serious criminal record.
