Hydrogen Train: A new chapter in the history of Indian Railways is set to be added after January 20, 2026. The country’s first hydrogen train is expected to begin operating on the Jind-Sonipat route. This train is not only a marvel of Indian engineering but will also prove to be a major boon for the environment.
Expert teams from the Lucknow-based RDSO are currently stationed in Jind, conducting thorough inspections of everything from machinery to safety systems. This is the world’s longest and most powerful broad-gauge hydrogen train, developed entirely under the ‘Made in India’ initiative. With its pollution-free travel and state-of-the-art technology, this train is set to become the future symbol of Indian Railways.

When will passenger service begin
According to railway officials and recent reports, the country’s first hydrogen train could hit the tracks any time after January 20, 2026. Currently, gas production and technical testing of the train are progressing at a rapid pace at the country’s largest hydrogen plant in Jind. The train will be flagged off as soon as the RDSO team gives its final approval on safety standards.

In the initial phase, the train will cover a distance of approximately 90 kilometers between Jind and Sonipat. This project is a significant step towards Indian Railways’ goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions, demonstrating India’s growing technological prowess to the world.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology
This train does not emit toxic fumes like conventional diesel engines. Its engine is based on hydrogen fuel cell technology. A controlled chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen occurs, generating electricity and charging the battery.

During this complex process, only pure water and water vapor are emitted instead of smoke. While a typical diesel train consumes four and a half liters of diesel per kilometer, this train travels one kilometer using just 2 kilograms of hydrogen. This technology will prove to be a game-changer in the future for environmental protection.
Passenger Capacity and Unparalleled Speed
The strength and design of this train set it apart from other trains in the world. It has a total of 10 coaches and a total power output of 2,400 kilowatts. The train is equipped with two driving power cars, each with a capacity of 1,200 kilowatts.

Metro-like Experience
The hydrogen train experience will be no less than a luxury metro. Its coaches were manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. Engine noise is virtually nonexistent, ensuring a steely silence in the journey.
For safety, it features automatic doors that accelerate only after they are fully closed. Each coach is equipped with digital displays, air conditioning, and a high-tech lighting system, providing passengers with a new and sophisticated experience of modern rail travel.
