Passport Address Update is an essential step if you are planning to travel abroad, study at a foreign university, or settle in another country. A passport is a government-issued document that proves your identity and citizenship. At the same time, a visa is issued by a foreign government allowing you to enter, stay, or work in that country.
If you have moved—whether to a new city or within the same area—updating your address in your passport is essential. Failing to do so can create problems during police verification, visa applications, or even embassy and consulate verification for international travel.
Address updates in a passport can be done online or offline. Still, document verification is mandatory at a Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or a Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
Online Process for Passport Address Update
To begin the passport address update process, visit the official website www.passportindia.gov.in. Register as a new user or log in with your existing credentials.
After logging in, select either “Apply for a new passport” or “Reissue a passport.” Under reissue, click on “Change in Existing Personal Particulars.”
Please enter your new residential address exactly as it appears on your proof of address documents. Upload scanned copies of valid proof of address, such as an Aadhaar card or a recent utility bill.
Pay the applicable fee online. The cost for a 36-page passport is ₹1,500, and for a 60-page passport, it is ₹2,000.
Once payment is completed, book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra. On the appointment day, carry the payment receipt, original passport, self-attested copies of the new address proof, and two recent photographs. If you have moved to a new city, police verification may also be conducted.
Documents Required for Address Change in Passport
To complete a successful passport address update, applicants can submit an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, electricity bill, water bill, or telephone bill, all dated within the last 3 months. Other accepted documents include a registered rent agreement, a bank statement for the previous 12 months, a gas connection bill, or a spouse’s passport if the applicant’s name is endorsed on it.
Police Verification Process
Police verification is a crucial part of the passport issuance or reissue process. If verification is unsuccessful, the passport is not issued. After your application is submitted, the passport office shares the details with the local police station. A police officer may visit your provided address to verify documents and residence details.
In most cases, once verification is complete, the updated passport is dispatched to your address within 3 to 7 days.
Keeping your passport address up to date helps avoid unnecessary delays and ensures a smooth experience during international travel and visa procedures.
