Vande Bharat Sleeper Express: Indian Railways has great news for commuters traveling from Patna to Delhi. In this regard, the Railways is preparing to launch the first sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat Express. This new service will cover a distance of approximately 1,000 kilometers in just eight hours, running at a top speed of 160 km/h. With its launch, Indian Railways aims to provide a faster and more comfortable travel option that meets the growing demand for long-distance sleeper services, marking a major step towards modernizing rail travel in India.

When will it be launched?

The first service is expected to begin before the new year, with the first rake dispatched from the Bharat Earth Movers Limited factory in Bengaluru on December 12, 2025. Trial runs are expected to begin soon after, paving the way for regular operation on the Patna-Delhi route. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav confirmed the indigenous design of this sleeper variant, emphasizing its importance for medium- and long-distance travel.

Features of Patna-New Delhi Vande Bharat Express

The sleeper train will have 16 coaches specifically designed for overnight travel. Unlike traditional Vande Bharat trains with chair-car seating, this model features sleeper berths, offering a more comfortable travel experience. Passengers will enjoy modern amenities such as auto-sensing doors, bio-digester toilets, and thoughtfully designed berths with soft lighting to enhance comfort. Safety has also been given special attention, including crash-proof coaches and an anti-collision system.

Schedule and frequency of service

The Patna-Delhi Sleeper Vande Bharat will operate six days a week, catering to the high demand on this busy route. With a total capacity of 827 passengers, the train will feature AC 1st Class, AC 2-Tier, and AC 3-Tier coaches, aiming to reduce congestion and offer a premium travel experience. While the exact fare has not yet been announced, it is expected to be comparable to Rajdhani Express fares.

How will this benefit passengers?

For those traveling between Patna and Delhi, this sleeper train could replace overnight travel. The convenience of sleeping during the journey not only saves time but also eliminates the need for additional accommodation. This service is particularly beneficial for festival travel, work commitments, or short trips to the capital, providing a clean and efficient alternative to existing express trains and buses.
