Who Is Justice Surya Kant? Another important chapter has been added to India’s judicial history. Justice Surya Kant was sworn in as the country’s 53rd Chief Justice (CJI) on Monday. He succeeded Justice B.R. Gavai, who had recommended his name under Article 124(2) of the Constitution. Following the President’s approval, Justice Surya Kant was appointed head of the country’s Supreme Court.

Who is Justice Surya Kant? Early Life and Education
According to official Supreme Court records, Justice Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, into a modest middle-class family. He graduated from the Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981.
He then completed his LLB from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. His studies remained uninterrupted even during his judicial career. He completed his LLM from Kurukshetra University in 201, and was a topper in the course. His academic journey demonstrates his belief in continuous learning and self-improvement.
Beginnings of Law: From Hisar to Chandigarh
After completing his LLB, Justice Suryakant began his legal practice at the Hisar District Court in 1984. Just a year later, he joined the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh. Here, he specialised in several important areas, including constitutional law, service matters, and civil disputes.
He established a strong and credible reputation for himself by representing several universities, government boards, banks, and institutions.
From Advocate General to High Court Judge
Recognising Justice Surya Kant’s talent and work ethic, he was appointed Haryana’s youngest Advocate General on July 7, 2000.
He was granted senior advocate status in March 2001. On January 9, 2004, he became a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
He also served as a member of the governing body of NALSA (National Legal Services Authority) from 2007 to 2011. He has also been associated with several key committees of the Indian Law Institute.

Journey to the Supreme Court
His judicial career continued to soar. On October 5, 2018, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court. Subsequently, on May 24, 2019, he became a Supreme Court judge.
He has also been the Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC) since November 12, 2024. And now, in 2025, he is taking charge of the Supreme Court judiciary as the new Chief Justice of India.
