Success Story: Vijay Singh, a resident of Sunhada village in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, chose a path few young people take today. After completing his MBA, he worked for renowned companies in the country, but the constant travel and hectic work schedule exhausted him. In 2015, seeing farmers’ chemical-free products at an organic market near India Gate ignited the seed of natural farming in him. The idea of ​​a healthy life and pure food resonated deeply with him. A New Ray of Hope Despite Initial Challenges

Vijay initially planted the Co 0238 variety of sugarcane. The first year faced challenges like low production and pest attacks, but despite this, he sold jaggery worth approximately ₹2 lakh. The sale of the remaining sugarcane brought his total income to ₹2.70 lakh. This was a significant indication that his efforts were going in the right direction.

A Strong Foundation for Success by Improving the Soil

Vijay realised that healthy soil is essential for improved production. With this thought in mind, he began preparing compost from Jeevamrit, Ghanjeevamrit, and cow dung manure on his farm. He chose improved varieties like CoS 8272 and CoPk 5191 over traditional sugarcane varieties. He also incorporated the ring pit technique into his farming, which transformed his entire production system.

Increased Yields and Sugarcane Quality with the Ring Pit Technique

In this technique, sugarcane sets are planted in a circular pattern, filled with organic manure, in pits. Proper spacing between rows and pits ensures adequate ventilation and sunlight for the plants. This reduces pest problems, and each pit yields 25 to 30 plants. The direct result of this technique is that Vijay is now growing approximately 600 quintals of sugarcane from two acres.

Value Addition Changed His Fortune, Increased Profits

Vijay’s true success lies not in selling sugarcane, but in its value addition. He combines regular jaggery with cardamom and dried fruit flavours. This yields significantly better returns. He earns around ₹8 lakh (approximately ₹6 lakh) from selling jaggery from his two-acre farm, with a net profit of approximately ₹6 lakh (approximately ₹3 lakh) per acre, resulting in a healthy 75% margin. His products are particularly popular in the markets of Delhi and West Bengal.

Intercropping Model Creates Multiple Income Sources

In addition to sugarcane, Vijay Singh has also developed a multi-cropping model. He created a fence of gooseberry (crimson) along the boundaries of his farm, planted guava in less than half an acre, and grew around 200 drumstick plants. He cultivates turmeric in the gaps between the drumstick plants. This model has created multiple sources of income for him.

New Initiative to Connect Farmers and Process Their Products

Vijay is now also connecting farmers who want to practice natural farming. His goal is to buy and process farmers’ produce and solve their marketing problems. He encourages small farmers to start intercropping on just 500 square meters of land and earn between 25,000 and 30,000 rupees per month by selling their produce directly to 25 and 30 families. Vijay Singh has proven that farming can be turned into a profitable business; all it takes is scientific technology and the right marketing.
