UPI is the most trusted payment system for crores of people in India. When it started, no one imagined it would become such an important part of daily life. Whether it is a big transaction or paying a small amount at a local shop, UPI is used everywhere. To make the service smoother, some changes are being made to its interface.
Now, UPI users will soon be able to make payments using biometric or wearable glass support, along with face and fingerprint verification. This will be added to the existing 4 or 6-digit PIN method. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) have introduced these new features at the Global Fintech Fest 2025 in Mumbai. The goal is to make the payment system faster, safer, and hands-free.
New UPI Features for Easier Payments
UPI transactions will now support biometrics and wearable glasses. The transaction will happen on the user’s own device, making sure that sensitive data never leaves the phone. The NPCI and RBI have also shown a new innovation that will make small payments completely hands-free.
The new feature, called UPI Lite for smart glasses, will let users make payments using just voice commands — no phone, no PIN, and no touch needed. A quick QR code scan will complete the transaction safely.
UPI Lite and Multi-Signatory Features
UPI Lite is a feature of UPI that enables users to make small value payments without needing a PIN or any additional verification.
The NPCI Multi-Signatory UPI feature will allow joint account holders to make payments using the approval of one or more persons. This will make it easier and more transparent for others to manage a family account or even a business account.
The system would be utilizing the Aadhaar based biometrics that include fingerprints, irises, and face biometrics. This means now when paying, a user can use a scan of their fingerprint or their face to verify the payment instead of needing to enter their pin. These changes come after the RBI (India’s central banks) approved of a following system that is going to replace the old pin based system.
