A Journey That Started with a Tiffin Box

Born in Patna in 1954, Anil Agarwal grew up in a humble Marwari family. Due to financial difficulties, he left school and moved to Mumbai at the age of 19. In his early days, he tried nine different businesses, but failed numerous times. His never-say-die attitude inspired him to establish the Vedanta Group in 1976.

He began his career in the scrap metal trade, which gave him a deep understanding of the industry. In 1986, he founded Sterlite Industries and, in 1993, established India’s first private copper smelter and refinery. His biggest successes were the acquisitions of BALCO and then Hindustan Zinc in 2001. These efforts earned him the title of “Metal King” in the industry.

Vedanta Group’s Global Debut

Today, Vedanta Group operates in several sectors, including zinc, copper, aluminum, silver, power, iron, steel, and oil and gas. Under Anil Agarwal’s leadership, the company has expanded significantly in the international market and invested in semiconductor and display glass manufacturing, giving new impetus to India’s “Make in India” mission.

Aggarwal’s Vision for Social Service

Along with his business, Anil Agarwal is also actively involved in social work. He has pledged to donate 75% of his wealth to social causes and is a member of The Giving Pledge. His flagship project, Nand Ghar, is modernizing Anganwadis across the country, providing nutrition to children and skill training and education to women.
