For people and businesses that do not need to get their accounts audited, the last date to file ITR is 15 September. Please file and e-verify your ITR for AY 2025-26 on the e-filing portal before 15.09.25.
Will those with an annual salary of Rs 3 lakh have to file returns?
The next question is who has to file ITR by September 15. Do people with an annual income of up to Rs 3 lakh also need to file? According to an Economic Times report, Sanjoli Maheshwari, Executive Director at Nangia & Co LLP, said, “The income limit for filing Income Tax Return (ITR) for the year 2024-25 depends on the taxpayer’s total income and the tax system chosen – old or new.”
She also said, “If the total income is more than the basic exemption limit, then filing ITR is compulsory. The basic exemption limit in the new tax system is Rs 3 lakh, and in the old tax system it is Rs 2.5 lakh.”
Will students have to file ITR?
Many people think only salaried or business people have to file ITR, but this is not true. Today, students and unemployed youth are also encouraged to file ITR, even if their income is less than the basic exemption limit. However, it is not compulsory. The reason is that filing ITR has many benefits. It helps to build financial credibility, makes it easier to claim refunds, and helps in doing big money transactions in the future.
