The story of the Nirjala Ekadashi fast is of Pandava brother Bhima, due to which this Nirjala Ekadashi is celebrated as Bhimaseni Ekadashi. According to the mythological story, once there came a time when Bhimsen told Ved Vyas that all his brothers observe fast on 2 Ekadashi falling every month, but it is very difficult for me to observe Ekadashi fast.

After this, Bhimsen asked Ved Vyas to tell him such a fast that by observing it, I can attain heaven. Then Ved Vyas advises Bhim to observe the Nirjala Ekadashi fast. By which the auspicious result of 24 Ekadashi fasts is obtained.

Now, after listening to these words of Ved Vyas ji, Bhimsen gets worried that he too will have to observe 24 Ekadashi fasts because he cannot live without food. Then Ved Vyas ji says that in this fast, one has to give up water and food. If someone accidentally consumes water during the fast, his fast is broken.

In this Ekadashi fast, one has to fast from sunrise to sunrise of Dwadashi and do charity. This will destroy sins and attain salvation. Hearing all this, Bhima becomes happy and succeeds in observing this fast. Due to which all his sins are destroyed, and in the end he attains heaven.

According to many astrologers, Ekadashi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month will start today, i.e., from 06 June at 2.15 pm. Then it will end on 07 June at 4.47 am. In this way, the Nirjala Ekadashi fast is being observed today.
