The Railway Ministry has stated that elderly passengers will not receive concessions on train fares. However, they are provided with lower berth reservations, separate counters, and other facilities for a comfortable journey. Indian Railways has also made special arrangements at stations and on trains for senior citizens, disabled individuals, and pregnant women. Over 2357.8 Crore Passengers Traveled in Indian Railways
According to data, around 2357.8 crore passengers, including senior citizens, have travelled on Indian Railways from the financial year 2020-21 to 2024-25 (till last December).
Automatic Lower Berth Allocation for Senior Citizens and Women
In the Rajya Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that Indian Railways has made provisions to automatically allocate lower berths to senior citizens and women passengers aged 45 years or above, even if they do not choose this option while booking. However, this is subject to seat availability at the time of booking to ensure a safe and comfortable journey.
Lower Berth Reservation Quotas
To assist senior citizens, women aged 45 years or above, and pregnant women, Railways has set fixed lower berth reservation quotas:
Sleeper Class – 6 to 7 lower berths per coach
3rd AC (3AC) – 4 to 5 lower berths per coach
2nd AC (2AC) – 3 to 4 lower berths per coach
Additionally, lower berths that become vacant during the journey are allotted on priority to senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant women. Special provisions have also been made for senior citizens in second-class general coaches on suburban railway sections.
Railways Provides Affordable Travel with Subsidies
The Railway Minister emphasized that Indian Railways aims to offer affordable services to all sections of society. In 2022-23, a subsidy of Rs 56,993 crore was provided for passenger tickets. On average, every railway passenger receives a 46% fare concession.
Additional Facilities for Senior Citizens and Special Passengers
To assist senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, Railways has introduced various facilities:
- Separate Reservation Counters – Available at Passenger Reservation System centres based on demand.
- Battery-Operated Vehicles – Available at major stations for senior citizens, disabled individuals, sick passengers, and pregnant women.
- Wheelchairs – Provided at railway stations for elderly and differently-abled passengers.
- Ramps, Lifts, and Escalators – Installed at various stations for easy access.
- Help Booths – Set up at different railway stations to assist passengers.
