Tata Motors: The Nexon, one of Tata Motors’ best-selling SUVs, is set for an overhaul. The company has commenced road testing for the next-generation Nexon, internally codenamed ‘Garud’. Although the vehicle was spotted heavily camouflaged, significant changes to its body structure and profile are clearly visible.
The Nexon was first launched in 2017 and later received major facelifts in 2020 and 2023. If the second-generation model launches in 2027, the current generation’s total lifecycle will span approximately ten years.
What has changed in the Nexon?
A close comparison of the test mule with the current model reveals several panel-level changes. The most striking modification is around the C-pillar, which now appears more upright and robust than before. The rear doors also feature an entirely new design. The roofline of the current Nexon slopes sharply toward the rear; while this gives it a coupé-like appearance, it can reduce space for rear-seat passengers.

In contrast, the upper section now looks sharper and more angular, whereas the current Nexon features a more rounded profile. This suggests Tata is not merely introducing another facelift by swapping exterior panels, but implementing substantial structural changes. Previous reports indicate that the next-generation Nexon will utilise a heavily modified version of the existing X1 architecture.
Rear Profile
On the upcoming Nexon, the rear windscreen appears flatter and more angular, unlike the curved glass found on the current model. It also appears that Tata is testing a new tailgate, a larger roof spoiler, and a redesigned rear bumper. While the final surfacing remains concealed due to heavy camouflage, the wider rear haunches and modified wheel arches are clearly visible. Interestingly, it features the taillights from the current Nexon, indicating that the production-spec tail lamps are still under development. The alloy wheels and exterior components further suggest that this is an early stage of development. More details regarding the production-ready design will likely emerge as further prototypes are spotted.

Engine Options
Regarding the powertrain, the next-generation Nexon is expected to retain petrol, flex-fuel, and CNG options. However, the future of its 1.5-litre diesel engine remains uncertain, as upgrading it to meet upcoming emission norms could prove costly.
Launch
When it launches in 2027, the new Nexon will face stiff competition in the sub-4-meter SUV segment from established rivals like the Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Maruti Brezza, as well as upcoming SUVs such as the Mahindra Vision S and Renault Bridger.
