WhatsApp username feature:- A while ago, the government banned Telegram following the leak of the NEET exam paper. Telegram had a feature that allowed users to create accounts using usernames while keeping their phone numbers hidden. Now, the government has asked WhatsApp to halt the rollout of a similar feature. The government has issued a notice to Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, seeking a response within three days. WhatsApp announced a feature that allows users to chat with others using usernames without sharing their mobile numbers. However, the government has expressed concerns regarding user privacy and the potential rise in cybercrime.
WhatsApp’s Preparations
WhatsApp is preparing to launch this new feature soon. It will enable users to contact others via specific usernames without sharing their mobile numbers. This feature will function similarly to those found on messaging apps like Telegram and Signal, eliminating the need to reveal one’s mobile number during conversations. While the feature promises enhanced privacy, the government is worried about the potential for online fraud and scams.
Government Concerns
The government has clearly stated that the feature must be reviewed before its launch. According to media reports, officials have questioned Meta about the feature’s functionality, verification measures, and how issues such as similar usernames and online fraud will be prevented. The government has explicitly instructed Meta not to launch the feature in India until it receives official approval.
‘Government Action
With cybercrime cases rising across the country, authorities believe that many instances of online fraud, fake investment schemes, and phishing attacks originate on platforms like WhatsApp. The government has expressed concern that the introduction of WhatsApp’s new feature could make it difficult to crack down on criminals. Following the NEET paper leak, the government is tightening its oversight of all messaging apps.
WhatsApp’s Response
In response to the government’s concerns, WhatsApp clarified that even with the introduction of the username feature, users will still need a phone number to use the app. The company is also prioritising safety measures in this regard. According to media reports, a WhatsApp spokesperson said that while the company offers users the option to create a preferred username, the feature has not yet launched and is scheduled to roll out next year.
The spokesperson added that WhatsApp has already reserved high-profile names to prevent impersonation, ensuring that only the rightful owners can use them. Users will still be required to provide a mobile number to use WhatsApp. Several safety protocols have been designed for the username feature; for instance, a limit has been set on how many new people can contact you. If a user with a new username messages you, WhatsApp will provide details—such as whether the username is linked to your contact list or to another country—allowing you to decide whether to respond.
Key Features of the New Update
WhatsApp has clarified that this upcoming feature will be optional; users can continue chatting using their phone numbers if they prefer. The new feature will allow for usernames of up to 35 characters, which will be entirely unique. Users can change or delete these usernames at any time. Additionally, this feature will help establish user identities across Meta platforms. It is considered one of WhatsApp’s most significant updates.
Government on Alert After NEET Paper Leak
The government has taken decisive action following the NEET paper leak. This year, numerous paper leaks and cybercrimes have raised questions regarding the functioning of digital platforms. Following the NEET paper leak, the government took strict action against Telegram, a major messaging app. The NEET paper leak sparked widespread questioning of the government. Consequently, the government imposed restrictions on Telegram leading up to the NEET re-examination (held on June 21). Specifically, the government suspended Telegram’s message-editing feature until June 30. According to the government, this edit feature was being misused to extort money from people by leaking exam papers.
Government’s Stance
The objective behind this government decision is to curb exam irregularities and stop gangs that extort money from students by leaking fake papers. Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA) fully supported the central government’s decision. The NTA stated that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) had restricted the Telegram channel based on the agency’s recommendation.
Will the Government Take Action?
Concerns are being raised about a new WhatsApp feature, specifically whether it could facilitate cybercriminal fraud. The government has clearly instructed Meta not to roll out this feature in India until a comprehensive assessment has been conducted.
Meta is now required to respond to the government’s notice; a three-day window has been provided for this response. The government’s decision on whether to allow the feature’s implementation in India will depend on Meta’s reply.
