Why is the popularity of mid-size SUVs on the rise?
The mid-size SUV segment is growing at a rapid pace in the Indian market. Companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, Mahindra, MG, Renault, Kia and Honda are preparing to bring their new models in view of the growing demand. MG Hector Hawk - the new era of plug-in hybrid
MG Motor India is all set to launch its first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV, the MG Hector Hawk in the Indian market. The car will be based on the Wuling Starlight 560 PHEV, which is very popular in ASEAN countries. Its electric variant will get a 56.7 kWh battery, which will give a range of more than 500 km.
The highlight of the Hector Hawk is its PHEV system, which will be paired with a 1.5 -litre petrol engine and a 20.5 kWh battery. The SUV will be able to run for around 100 km in electric mode only, while the range is expected to be 1,100 km when fully charged and the fuel tank is full. That is, the daily drive in the city can run without spending petrol, while the petrol engine will work automatically during the long journey.
MG could take the wraps off this new SUV on 16 July 2026, while the launch is expected around the festive season (Diwali). It will be priced between Rs 18-25 lakh.
2027 Hyundai Creta - New platform, new avatar
The Hyundai Creta, one of India's most popular SUVs, is now coming to its third generation. The new-gen Creta will be based on the all-new K3 platform, which will be bigger and more premium than the existing model. The spy shots reveal that the new Creta's length could increase from the current 4,330mm to around 4,500mm.
The new Creta will see a number of major updates:
The new platform: The K3 platform will support improved ride and handling, robust structure and hybrid system
The premium design: Thin DRLs, new headlamps, flush door handles and 18-19 -inch alloy wheels
Advanced features: 12.3 -inch dual screen, new Pleos Connect infotainment system (OTA update support), multi-link rear suspension, Level 2 + ADAS
Engine options: 1.5 -litre NA petrol, turbo-petrol and diesel
It could be launched as early as 2027.
The Kia Seltos Hybrid... A claimed mileage of 25 + kmpl
Kia India is gearing up to launch the Seltos SUV in the Indian market. The strong hybrid system will combine the existing 1.5 -litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with an electric motor and battery pack. The biggest feature of this setup will be its mileage - about 25-26 kilometers per liter.
Other features of the Seltos Hybrid:
Strong Hybrid System: Ability to run only on electric mode at low speed, which will be very effective in traffic
The updated design: The new-gen Seltos will come with a bigger, bolder and modern look
The international hybrid system: The 1.6 -litre hybrid is available in international markets, but the 1.5 -litre system can be adopted in India
It could be launched by mid-2027 and could be priced at Rs 19-26 lakh (on-road)
The Renault Duster Hybrid Sell-Out Booking
Renault has brought back its classic SUV, the Duster, to the third generation in the Indian market. Launched with a starting price of Rs 10.29 lakh (ex-showroom), the highlight of the SUV is its strong hybrid variant, which will arrive around Diwali 2026. Interestingly, the entire booking for 2026 of this hybrid variant has already been sold out!
Features of Duster Hybrid:
1.8 -litre strong hybrid system: 109hp petrol engine, 49hp electric motor, 20hp starter generator and 1.4 kWh battery - 160hp and 172Nm torque overall
The best mileage: Approximate mileage of 26 kmpl
Driving in electric mode: 80% of urban driving will be in EV mode.
ADAS Level-2: Features like panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, 360-degree camera and large screen
It could be anywhere between Rs 20-25 crore.
The Honda Elevate... Update with new features
Honda is also preparing to give a mid-life update to its SUV, the Elevate. Recently, its test mule has been seen on the roads, which indicates that it will come with new features.
Expected changes in the Elevate Facelift:
New features: New 10.25 -inch touchscreen (like the City facelift), ventilated front seats, 360-degree camera, panoramic sunroof and wireless charging
ADAS update: Updated ADAS suite with rear cross-traffic alert and improved automatic emergency braking
Exteriors: New front and rear bumpers, redesigned headlamps and tail lamps
No engine changes: 1.5 -litre NA petrol engine (121hp, 145Nm) remains the same
It could be launched in the second half of 2026.

With the arrival of these new SUVs, there will be tough competition in the mid-size segment. MG's PHEV will bring plug-in technology to India for the first time. The new platform and bigger size of the Hyundai Creta will take it to the premium league. The Kia Seltos Hybrid and the Renault Duster Hybrid will set new benchmarks in terms of mileage. With the Honda Elevate facelift, the company will want to strengthen its hold.
