Swiggy, Zomato Services: Cooking can be quite challenging for city-dwelling students and working individuals. Food delivery services play a crucial role in supporting them by offering late-night meal options. These platforms enable users to order their preferred dishes from a variety of restaurants without leaving their homes. Platforms like Swiggy and Zomato are renowned for this service, but it will soon be discontinued in Bengaluru due to issues raised by the Bengaluru Hotel Association.
Reasons for the shutdown of Swiggy-Zomato
– Complaints from Bengaluru’s hotel and restaurant owners have prompted strict measures against Swiggy and Zomato.
– The Restaurant Association has warned that unless ongoing issues are resolved, many establishments will stop accepting orders from these platforms starting August 15th.
Restaurant owners’ grievances
– The Restaurant Association has received numerous complaints against Swiggy and Zomato, particularly about payment and billing discrepancies.
– Restaurant owners demand transparency, including a halt to unexplained deductions from their fees due to customer cancellations.
– They seek compensation for losses incurred when orders are canceled after food preparation.
– Full payment breakdowns are requested to clarify deductions, and a dedicated relationship manager is sought to address restaurant concerns.
– Restaurant owners insist that no promotional campaigns should be conducted without their consent.
Potential opportunity for Flipkart
– If Swiggy-Zomato ceases operations in Bengaluru, this could benefit Flipkart, as it aims to enter the food delivery market.
– Flipkart Food Delivery is set to launch as a trial in August, starting in Bengaluru.
– However, Flipkart must adapt its approach to meet the demands and expectations of restaurant owners to succeed in this competitive market. They argue that the business model is detrimental to both restaurants and customers. Despite claims of free or discounted delivery, customers end up paying more compared to dining in, while restaurants lose control over pricing and profits. P C Rao, the head of BHA, stated that they have given a 15-day ultimatum for these issues to be addressed.
If not resolved, a collective decision will be made with other associations. Bengaluru is home to approximately 34,000 eateries, with nearly 20,000 of them being featured on online food delivery services. If negotiations prove unsuccessful, a significant portion of these establishments may cease online orders starting from August 15th.
