Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has been discharged from a Kolkata hospital, where he was admitted after suffering a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa. A video of Gill is now going viral on social media, showing the Indian captain leaving the hospital wearing a cervical collar. Given Gill’s condition, it appears unlikely he will be able to play the second Test against South Africa. Team India’s support staff and doctors are seen with Gill in the viral video.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir said a decision on Gill’s availability will be made after a physiotherapist’s assessment. Speaking at a press conference after the first Test between India and South Africa on Sunday, Gambhir said, “Gill is still being evaluated. We’ll see what happens. The physiotherapist will make a decision this evening, and then we’ll make a decision.” Gill was discharged from the hospital yesterday. He will remain at the team hotel. He will be monitored by doctors and the BCCI medical team.
Gill appeared to be in significant discomfort before the start of play on the second day of the Kolkata Test. He came out to bat in India’s first innings and, shortly after opening his account with a slog sweep, walked off the field with the team physio clutching his neck.
He was taken to the hospital on a stretcher due to a neck injury and reportedly remained in the ICU for observation. The BCCI later issued a statement stating that Gill would not bat in India’s second innings. Gill’s injury forced the Indian team to field with one batsman less in the second innings. India lost the first Test by 30 runs.
