Reason for Retirement

The next ODI World Cup is two years away, and Smith has stepped down to help Australia prepare for it. He said, “Now is a good time to start preparing for (Australia’s) 2027 World Cup, so it feels like the right time to step down. The journey has been incredible, and I have enjoyed every moment of it. Winning two World Cups was one of my greatest moments, and sharing the journey with amazing teammates made it even more special.”

Focus on Test Cricket

Smith, who has scored 36 Test centuries, is now prioritizing Test cricket. He said, “Test cricket is still my number one priority. I’m looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies tour in the winter, and then the home series against England. I believe I still have a lot to give.”

Smith’s ODI Legacy

Smith’s 5,800 runs make him Australia’s 12th-highest run-scorer in ODIs. Only five Australian players have scored more centuries than him, and among them, only David Warner has a better batting average.
