Rishabh Pant: Team India has officially announced its squad for the Champions Trophy, and Rishabh Pant has secured his spot. With his inclusion in the 15-member roster, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman is poised to take on a new role.

The possible new role

This upcoming responsibility, however, is not linked to the national team but rather to the IPL 2025. As anticipated, Rishabh Pant is set to be named the captain of the Lucknow Super Giants, with an official announcement expected on January 20. Lucknow Super Giants acquired Pant for a staggering Rs 27 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history.

This hefty price tag fueled speculation about his potential captaincy role. The franchise is likely to confirm Pant’s leadership during a press conference at RPSG’s headquarters in Kolkata on January 20.

Pant likely to fill KL Rahul’s shoes

Rishabh Pant can take over the captaincy from KL Rahul, who has led the team since the 2022 season. Under Rahul’s guidance, LSG reached the playoffs in both IPL 2022 and 2023 but fell short of the finals. The 2024 season, however, was disappointing for the team, as they finished seventh in the points table, marking a significant decline.

Pant’s second stint as an IPL captain

If this happen, then that will be Pant’s second stint as an IPL captain, having previously led the Delhi Capitals. He joined the Capitals in 2016 and took on the captaincy in 2021, leading the team in every season except for 2023, when he was sidelined due to a car accident in December 2022.
