Speed Post Rate Hike: On the occasion of Rakshabandhan, the Indian Postal Department has made a significant change that affects brothers and sisters. Those living outside their home states will now face higher costs for sending gifts and Rakhi. Typically, brothers send gifts to their sisters and Rakhi to their brothers using parcel or speed post services. However, due to a recent increase in rates for these services, the costs have risen.

What will it cost to send a parcel?

The cost of sending parcels is determined by factors such as weight, size, distance, and service type. The fee for sending a 500-gram parcel has increased by Rs 30, bringing the total to Rs 40. Previously, the charge for a 500-gram parcel was just Rs 42, but now it will range from Rs 77 to Rs 84. The fee is set at Rs 77 for parcels sent within a state and Rs 84 for those sent between states. Additionally, GST will be applied to these fees.

Increased Speed Post Charges

The postal department has also raised the rates for Speed Post services. A 20-gram Speed Post that used to cost Rs 42 has now seen an increase of Rs 14, making the new cost Rs 56. As the weight and distance increase, so will the fees.

In response to the rise in parcel and speed post rates, the Postal Department explained that the rates had not been updated for several years. With the new pricing structure, parcel charges will now be based not only on weight but also on distance and region. This means that sending parcels of the same weight to different locations will incur varying charges.

However, customers sending rakhis on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan will get a 10 percent discount from the postal department. According to the new rates of the postal department, the base fee for an India Post parcel up to 500 grams has increased from 18 rupees to 34 rupees. GST will have to be paid separately on this. The charges will vary based on distance and area.
