Small Savings Scheme Interest Rates: If you’re looking to invest safely and steer clear of the stock market’s fluctuations, today is a significant day for you. The central government is set to reveal new interest rates for small savings schemes for the quarter spanning July to September 2026, effective from June 30, 2026.

Millions of investors nationwide are eagerly anticipating this announcement. This is particularly true for those involved in popular schemes such as the Public Provident Fund (PPF), Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS), and Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY), who are keen to find out if the government will raise, lower, or maintain the current interest rates. Any new rates established will take effect on July 1, 2026.

There has been no change for 8 consecutive quarters

In the last quarter, April-June 2026, the government opted to keep the interest rates for all small savings schemes steady, maintaining the existing rates. This marks the eighth consecutive quarter without any changes. Only a notification from the Finance Ministry will clarify whether investors can expect an interest rate increase this time.

What interest rates are currently being offered for each scheme?

Before the Finance Ministry announces the new rates today, here’s a complete overview of the existing interest rates:

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) and the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme (SCSS) provide the highest annual interest rate of 8.2%.

The National Savings Certificate (NSC) offers 7.7%, while the Kisan Vikas Patra (KVP) and the 5-Year Post Office Time Deposit offer 7.5%.

The Post Office Monthly Income Scheme (POMIS) provides 7.4%, and the Public Provident Fund (PPF) and 3-Year Time Deposit offer 7.1%. The 2-Year Time Deposit earns 7.0%, the 1-Year Time Deposit offers 6.9%, and the 5-Year Recurring Deposit (RD) provides 6.7% annual interest. These rates are reviewed by the government every quarter.

How are the interest rates of small savings schemes decided?

The government reviews the interest rates for these schemes every quarter. Rates are determined based on factors such as government bond yields, general market interest rate trends, and domestic and global economic conditions.

Why are these government schemes best for investors?

These schemes have always been the preferred choice for traditional investors seeking long-term, safe investments. Here are the main reasons:

100% Government Guarantee: Being government backed, there is no risk of sinking.

Fixed and stable returns: These schemes are not directly affected by market fluctuations, which ensures fixed returns.

Great Tax Benefits: Investing in schemes like PPF and Sukanya Samriddhi offers huge tax benefits under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act.
