Sawan Shivratri 2026: The month of Sawan began on July 30, and the chant “Har-Har Mahadev” echoes everywhere. Devotees of Lord Shiva appear immersed in devotion to Bholenath. Sawan Shivratri will be celebrated on August 11. The festival of Sawan Shivratri is considered highly auspicious for attaining the devotion and grace of Lord Shiva. It is believed that worshipping Bholenath with a sincere heart on this day fulfils all one’s wishes. However, it is important to keep certain things in mind during the worship; otherwise, one may not reap the full benefits of the ritual.

On Sawan Shivratri, devotees observe a fast, perform Jalabhishek (ritual bathing with water) of Lord Shiva, and worship Bholenath throughout the four *Prahars* (watches) of the night. According to religious beliefs, worshipping Lord Shiva on Sawan Shivratri brings spiritual peace to devotees. On this day, worshipping Shiva during the four *Prahars* of the night is considered just as significant as daytime worship.

How to perform the complete Sawan Shivratri puja at home? Learn the simple method:

1. First, clean the place of worship

After bathing on the morning of Shivratri, thoroughly clean the designated place of worship in your home. If possible, clean the area again before the evening puja. Place an image or idol of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on a clean *Chauki* (low wooden platform). Keep your mind calm during the worship and avoid rushing.

2. Light a lamp and begin the worship

First, meditate on Lord Ganesha and then light a lamp. Next, while meditating on Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, make a *Sankalp* (solemn vow or intention) to perform the worship.

3. Perform Jalabhishek on the Shivling or image

Now, first offer clean water and then *Gangajal* (holy water from the Ganges) to the Shivling or the image. Follow this by performing *Abhishek* with milk, curd, ghee, and honey. If you are unable to perform the full ritual at home, you can still worship Lord Shiva by performing *Abhishek* with just water and *Gangajal*.

Chant “Om Namah Shivaya” while performing the *Abhishek*. Try to keep your mind focused on meditating upon Lord Shiva during the *Abhishek* (ritual bathing) rather than letting it wander.

4. Offer Belpatra and flowers

After the *Abhishek*, apply sandalwood paste and offer *Akshat* (unbroken rice grains) to the *Shivling*. Following this, be sure to offer *Belpatra* (wood apple leaves), *Dhatura*, *Aak* flowers, and *Shami* leaves. Use clean and intact leaves when offering *Belpatra*. According to religious belief, *Belpatra* is extremely dear to Lord Shiva; hence, it holds special significance in the worship performed on Sawan Shivratri.

5. Offer Bhog (sacred food offering) to Lord Shiva

You may offer seasonal fruits, sweets, or *Panchmewa* (a mix of five dry fruits) as *Bhog* during the worship. Afterwards, perform *Aarti* for Lord Shiva using incense and a *Diya* (lamp). All family members can join together to chant “Om Namah Shivaya.”
