Red Fort: Big news for common people. The iconic Red Fort, a historic monument of the country, will be entirely closed to the public starting today, July 15, 2026. This closure is due to the extensive preparations for the upcoming Independence Day celebrations. Let’s see how long the Red Fort will stay closed.

Every year, the Red Fort serves as the centerpiece for the Independence Day festivities on August 15th. On this significant day, the nation celebrates its freedom with great fervor. The Prime Minister raises the national flag here and delivers a speech to the country. A large number of security personnel, officials, and dignitaries gather for this occasion. To prevent any security issues, preparations begin weeks ahead of time.

From July 15th to August 15th, barricading, stage setup, security checks, and technical installations will take place within the fort. For security purposes, the fort has been entrusted to security agencies starting today.

Important details for visitors

Typically, the Red Fort welcomes guests from Tuesday to Sunday, between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm, and is closed on Mondays. However, due to the preparations for the August 15th celebrations, this usual schedule is currently on hold. This restriction affects all tourists, both local and international. No visitors will be permitted inside until after the August 15th events are concluded.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has released an official order indicating that this decision is made under Rule 5 of the ‘Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1959’.

During the upcoming month, the following activities will take place within the Red Fort complex:

Stage and seating arrangements: A main stage will be set up for the Prime Minister’s address, along with seating for the guests.

Security cordon: Security personnel will oversee the entire area, implementing thorough checks and barricades.

Light and Sound Show Suspension: For security reasons, the well-known evening “Jai Hind” Light and Sound Show will be put on hold during this time.

Historical significance and advice for tourists

Since India’s independence in 1947, the Red Fort has served as the official venue for the Independence Day National Address. Every day, it attracts thousands of visitors from both India and abroad, being a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Due to the security measures in place, the administration recommends that both domestic and international tourists refrain from planning visits to the Red Fort until after August 15. The monument will be accessible to the public again starting August 16, following the conclusion of the Independence Day celebrations and the clearance from security agencies.
