Post Office Rule: India Post released an official announcement on Thursday (July 16). This notification states that refunds are now authorized for cancellations made either online or at the counter. This means that if you cancel your bookings at the Post Office, whether online or in person, you will be eligible for a refund. However, there are specific conditions that must be fulfilled before the refund process can be initiated.

As per the India Post notification, individuals who book postal items through the web portal or mobile app can cancel their bookings and request a postage refund before the items are accepted by the post office.

What are the refund rules?

The notification mentions, “For items booked at the post office counter, the sender can request a cancellation at the post office, or the post office may cancel the booking on the same day if there was an error in data entry.” Nevertheless, postage refunds for cancelled postal items will be provided according to the administrative guidelines issued by the Department of Posts periodically.

The new regulation permits refunds for postage, special charges, and air surcharges to the sender in cases where services are suspended, following the administrative instructions issued from time to time. International bookings can also be recalled. The rules outlined also allow the sender of any accountable outward international postal item to recall the item from the booking office for any reason, in line with the instructions provided by the administration.

Additionally, the rule permits the recipient of an accountable internal international postal item to redirect the item from the delivery office by paying the necessary postage charges. However, if the new address is within the same post office’s delivery area, no charges will apply.

Furthermore, the new regulation allows international consignees to recall or redirect shipments from foreign destinations, subject to the policies of the relevant postal administration as per the administrative instructions in effect at that time.
