PNB Alert: If you have an account with Punjab National Bank (PNB), there is an important update for you. PNB may close certain inactive bank accounts after November 10, 2026. This applies to accounts that have had no transactions for a long period and currently have a zero balance. Punjab National Bank is one of the country’s major public sector banks.
According to PNB, accounts that have seen no customer-initiated transactions over the past three years (up to September 30, 2026) and currently hold a zero balance are under review. The bank may take action regarding these accounts. Customers are advised to complete the necessary procedures by November 10, 2026, to avoid any future inconvenience.
Which account holders are affected?
PNB has issued a notice on its social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter). This notice is directed at account holders who have not conducted any transactions for the last three years, as well as those whose accounts have a zero balance. The bank’s primary concern is that such accounts could pose security risks; therefore, to prevent potential misuse, the bank plans to close or deactivate them.
According to Punjab National Bank, the bank has taken this step to prevent the misuse of accounts and mitigate associated risks. However, the bank will not close all inactive accounts. Only those accounts that meet both of the aforementioned criteria may be subject to this action.
When is an account considered inactive?
According to PNB’s guidelines, an account may be classified as ‘inoperative’ if no transactions have taken place for 24 consecutive months. This includes both financial and non-financial activities. Non-financial activities may include actions such as requesting a bank product or updating KYC-related information. This alert from PNB specifies two conditions for account closure: a zero balance and the absence of any activity beyond a stipulated date.
How can an account be reactivated?
Proof of identity and address: Valid documents such as a passport, voter ID, or driving license.
Tax-related documents: Documents such as a PAN card or Form 16.
Request letter: A formal application to reactivate the account.
