PM Fasal Bima Yojana: Big relief for farmers. The agricultural sector is a key component of India’s economy, with millions of farmers relying on it for their livelihood. Unfortunately, natural disasters can devastate their hard work. To address this issue, the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance Scheme (PM Fasal Bima Yojana) has emerged as a crucial safety net for farmers, providing financial aid in case of crop failure and proving to be a significant support for them.
This scheme covers farmers’ Rabi and Kharif crops, with a unique feature being that Kharif crops are insured at a minimal premium of just 2%, with the government covering the rest of the premium. This makes the scheme highly accessible and beneficial for farmers, who have already received substantial compensation through it.

The PM Crop Insurance Scheme is particularly valuable in protecting farmers from the anticipated losses due to El Nino, as forecasted by the Meteorological Department. This weather phenomenon could lead to crop damage, adding to the challenges already faced by farmers due to erratic weather patterns. By having their crops insured under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana, farmers can avoid falling into debt traps during such difficult times.
Farmers are required to pay premiums of 2% for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and a maximum of 5% for cash crops under this scheme. To ensure widespread coverage, the PM Crop Insurance Scheme is being implemented through 18 insurance companies, 1.7 lakh bank branches, and 44,000 Common Service Centers across 27 states and union territories.

In case of crop damage, it is crucial for farmers to report the loss within 72 hours to be eligible for insurance claims. Failing to do so promptly could lead to claim rejection, hence it’s essential to notify the insurance company, bank, or agriculture department official within the stipulated time frame.
To apply for the PM Crop Insurance Scheme, farmers can visit the Prime Minister’s Crop Insurance portal (www.pmfby.gov.in), use the PMFBY AIDE app, or access the Jan Seva portal from the convenience of their homes.
