Paytm: There is a big update for Paytm users. If you are a frequent user of the Paytm app for making UPI transactions, recharging your mobile, or paying bills, there is positive news for you. The process of closing down Paytm Payments Bank (PPBL) has commenced following the directive from the Delhi High Court.
However, this closure does not imply that the Paytm app will be discontinued. The majority of Paytm’s digital services for the public will continue without any changes, ensuring that day-to-day transactions remain unaffected.

Over the recent years, the operations of the Paytm app and Paytm Payments Bank have been largely separated. Consequently, the shutdown will only impact banking services, while UPI payments, QR code payments, mobile recharges, bill payments, and other digital payment services will persist as usual.
What will cease and what will persist?
The closure of Paytm Payments Bank signifies the conclusion of its banking services. If you use the Paytm app for making UPI payments from a different bank account, there is no need for alterations. UPI payments, QR code payments, mobile recharges, utility bill payments, and various online payment services will remain accessible through the app as usual. Additionally, services such as Paytm Soundbox, card machines, payment gateways, Paytm Gold, and Paytm Money will not be affected by this development.
What should individuals with funds in the bank do?
For those who have funds deposited in Paytm Payments Bank, there is no cause for alarm as customer deposits are secure. Any customers who have not received their funds yet will have them returned following the bank’s protocols. These customers should retain their bank account records, bank statements, and KYC documents. They should also keep an eye out for any directives and deadlines provided by the liquidator and the RBI.
What actions are required by UPI users?
If your UPI is connected to a different bank account, this decision will not impact you. However, if your UPI is still linked to an old or inactive Paytm Payments Bank account, it should be promptly linked to another bank account. Individuals who had old Fastags or wallets linked to Paytm Payments Bank and have any outstanding claims will have them settled through this process.
Why was the bank forced to close?
Paytm Payments Bank has been under regulatory scrutiny for several years. In March 2022, the RBI prohibited it from acquiring new customers. Subsequently, in 2024, the bank was restricted from accepting new deposits and providing certain banking services. Ultimately, in April 2026, its banking license was revoked. Following the Delhi High Court’s order, the formal process of shutting down the bank has now commenced. During this phase, the official liquidator will oversee the management of the bank’s assets, resolution of its debts, and handling of customer claims.
Will investors face consequences?
As Paytm Payments Bank is not publicly traded on the stock market, regular stock investors will not be directly impacted by this decision. Additionally, Paytm’s parent company, One97 Communications, has already devalued its investment in the bank. Consequently, the likelihood of further repercussions on investors resulting from this decision is deemed low.
