Onion Price: Big news for common people. Amidst the surge in onion prices, efforts are underway to provide them in Delhi at a price of Rs 35 per kilogram. Beginning Thursday, the central government will offer buffer stock onions in Delhi at a discounted rate of Rs 35 per kilogram. This move by the central government is significant as onion prices in various cities have soared to Rs 55 to Rs 60 per kilogram.
A stockpile of 1.21 lakh tonnes
Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi is set to launch the sale of onions at reduced prices in Delhi on Thursday, as per a senior official from the Consumer Affairs Ministry. The central government has amassed a stockpile of 1.21 lakh tonnes of onions for 2026, which will be released into the market.
– Arrival of 840 tonnes of onions in Delhi via special train
To combat the escalating onion prices, the central government is transporting 840 tons of onions from Nashik to Delhi through a special train known as the “Kanda Express.” This consignment is spread across 21 wagons.
The initiatives by the central government are anticipated to lead to a drop in onion prices in Delhi-NCR and deter hoarding and profiteering. The increased onion supply is projected to drive prices down further.
The central government will also draw on buffer stocks from NCCF and NAFED to provide relief. Once in Delhi, the onions will be distributed to other cities. The retail sales will be managed by three agencies: NAFED, NCCF, and the Central Warehouse.
Sales to extend to NCR cities
NCCF’s Managing Director, Anees Joseph Chandra, mentioned, “We will commence sales in Delhi on Thursday, followed by the launch of affordable onion sales in NCR cities by the weekend.” NCCF holds around 62,000 tons of onion buffer stock, with 400 tons being transported from Nashik to Delhi by rail.
NCCF will retail onions through 100 Central Warehouse stores in Delhi and is considering sales through about 300 Mother Dairy outlets. Initially, onions will be sold through 15 mobile vans, with plans to increase them to 40 from Friday onwards.
Expansion of sales to Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Varanasi, and other cities
Anees Joseph Chandra also stated that the onions arriving via rail will be sold in Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Varanasi, and other cities. NAFED, with a buffer stock of less than 55,000 tonnes, will also sell onions at reduced rates in Delhi, Kochi, Guwahati, and other centers.
