NPS: When it comes to saving money, most individuals look for options that guarantee safety and long-term returns. Notably, the choices available for NPS investors are about to grow. The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has given the green light to four new pension funds. This expansion will bring the total number of pension fund managers in NPS to 14. As a result, investors will have a wider array of choices for their investments, enabling them to make well-informed decisions based on the performance of fund managers, their investment strategies, fees, and services.
The PFRDA is optimistic that the addition of new fund managers will foster competition among firms. This could be advantageous for those who are investing in NPS for the long haul. However, it’s important to note that having more options does not guarantee fixed or assured returns. The returns from NPS are influenced by market conditions and the selected investment strategy. Investors also have the flexibility to switch fund managers if they find it necessary.

Now you will have more choices in NPS.
Once you open an NPS account, you will need to select a pension fund manager to handle your investments. These fund managers allocate the investors’ funds into various channels, such as the stock market, government bonds, and corporate bonds. With the introduction of four new fund managers, investors will now have a total of 14 options. This will lessen the reliance on any single fund manager. Investors can evaluate aspects like historical performance, investment strategies, fees, and customer service across different firms.
What advantages come with more fund managers?
An increase in the number of fund managers can enhance competition among companies. This is likely to result in improved investment strategies, customer service, and technical features. If a fund consistently falls short in performance, investors may look to other fund managers.
According to the Public Sector Undertaking (PFRDA), over the last 15 years, the conservative schemes of NPS, which are considered low-risk, have yielded an average annual return of around 9.2 to 9.3 percent. However, this is past performance and there’s no guarantee that similar returns will be achieved in the future.
How is money invested in NPS?
An NPS investor can invest in a variety of asset classes based on their preferences. These options include equities, government securities, and corporate bonds. Investors can also choose between active or auto choice. The pension fund manager is responsible for investing the investor’s deposits according to established rules. Their goal is to help the investment grow over the long term. However, market-linked investments involve the risk of volatility.

Comparison can be done with the ‘Pride-Disha’ tool
PFRDA has also launched a new tool called ‘PRIDE-Disha’ for investors. This will make it easier to understand and compare the performance of different pension funds. This tool takes into account an investor’s actual investment patterns rather than just looking at returns over a specific period. Because most NPS investors make monthly deposits, returns over a specific period alone don’t provide a complete picture of their actual earnings.
