Nanda Devi Kanya Yojana: Every parent aspires for their daughter to excel in her studies and become independent in the future. Unfortunately, many families facing financial hardships struggle to provide for their daughters’ education and future aspirations. To assist these families, the Uttarakhand government has initiated the Nanda Devi Kanya Yojana. This scheme primarily aims to offer financial security to daughters from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Often, due to financial limitations, girls’ education is disrupted, or they are married off at an early age.

The government is committed to ensuring that daughters have the chance to pursue further education and explore their career options. The government seeks to eliminate financial barriers so that no daughter’s education or dreams are compromised. If your family qualifies for this scheme, make sure to apply on time to benefit from it.

What is the Nanda Devi Kanya Yojana?

The Nanda Devi Kanya Yojana is a social welfare initiative by the Uttarakhand government. Under this program, a fixed deposit of ₹5,000 is created in the name of daughters born into families living below the poverty line (BPL). This amount is held until the daughter reaches the age of 18. After this period, she can withdraw the funds along with the accrued interest. This money can be utilized for higher education, skill development, self-employment, or other essential future needs. The goal of this scheme is to financially empower daughters and secure their future.

How can one benefit from the scheme?

This scheme is exclusively available to permanent residents of Uttarakhand. The family must fall below the poverty line (BPL). The daughter must be born in the state, and the necessary documents must be submitted during the application process. Generally, a maximum of two daughters per family can qualify for this scheme. Required documents may include birth certificates, BPL cards, residence certificates, parental ID cards, and other relevant paperwork. The application process is carried out through the district social welfare department or the appropriate government office. This scheme also works to foster a positive attitude towards daughters in society, promote education, and support economically disadvantaged families.

It is also considered a small but important step towards empowering daughters to become self-reliant. Big money will be made from FD Under this scheme, the government opens a fixed deposit (FD) of Rs 5,000 in the name of a daughter born into a poor family, which is paid back with interest when the daughter turns 18. While the initial amount of Rs 5,000 may not seem large, the interest accrues as the FD remains in place for 18 years. Let’s assume you earn 7.4% interest on the FD. If you invest Rs 5,000 in an FD for 18 years, you will receive a total of Rs 18,714 in your account. The investment amount is Rs 5,000 and the interest is Rs 13,714.

Now, suppose you invest an additional Rs 22,000 in this same FD, you will earn Rs 1,01,055 after 18 years. The return alone will be Rs 74,055. In such a situation, when the daughter becomes an adult, this amount can help her in her studies, pursuing a professional course, preparing for a competitive exam, or starting a small business. This scheme provides relief to families living in the hilly and economically weak areas of Uttarakhand. It gives parents the assurance that some money is secured for their daughter’s future. This is why the Nanda Devi Kanya Yojana is included among the important daughter-centric schemes of the state. If your family qualifies, apply on time and take advantage of this government scheme.
