EPFO: With the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) increasing the salary limit for provident fund coverage from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month, employees will receive Rs 20 lakh less on retirement, though they will get the benefit of lifelong pension.
EPFO Retirement Update
This move by the EPFO has resulted in a portion of employees’ contributions being diverted directly to the pension scheme (EPS). A portion of these employees’ employer contributions will now go toward pensions instead of PF accounts. This will reduce the total lump sum PF fund received at retirement by approximately Rs 20 lakh.
However, in return, employees will receive approximately Rs 9,600 per month for life, starting at age 58. It should be noted that the central government increased the salary limit for PF coverage from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 this year. This change by the central government has now come into effect automatically.
The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) provides pension benefits to eligible members under the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS). Members who meet the prescribed eligibility conditions can receive a monthly pension after reaching the age of 58. However, receiving a pension is not automatic for every EPFO subscriber, as eligibility depends on factors such as pensionable service, contributions and the applicable scheme rules.
Under the EPS, eligible employees generally need to complete at least 10 years of eligible pensionable service to qualify for a monthly pension at the age of 58. Those who have fewer than 10 years of eligible service may not qualify for a regular monthly pension under the scheme, although withdrawal benefits may be available subject to the applicable rules. Employees should also understand that EPF savings and EPS pension benefits are different: EPF provides a retirement savings balance, while EPS offers pension benefits to eligible members.

Before making any retirement decision, employees should check their service records, UAN details and pension eligibility. They should also verify whether any reported change in EPFO pension rules has been officially announced. For accurate information, members can visit the official EPFO website or contact the relevant EPFO office. Understanding the eligibility criteria and pension rules can help employees plan their retirement and avoid confusion about receiving a lifelong monthly pension after the age of 58.
