Milk Price Hike: Another major shock to people. After Onion, Jaggery and Sugar, Now Milk price is going to rise. Yes you’ve heard it right. Just ahead of the festive season, the rising cost of milk is set to affect the household budgets of Mumbaikars. Starting September 1, 2026, the wholesale price of fresh milk in Mumbai will rise by Rs 9 per liter. The Mumbai Milk Producers Association has announced that the current wholesale price will increase from Rs 93 to Rs 102 per liter. These new rates will be in effect from September 1 until February 28, 2027.

It’s essential to understand that these prices are wholesale. Consequently, the retail price consumers pay for milk may differ based on local vendors and distribution expenses. As stated by the Mumbai Milk Producers Association, the current wholesale price of fresh milk is Rs 93 per liter. Following the Rs 9 increase on September 1, the new price will be Rs 102 per liter. A report from the Marathi website Pudhari indicates that these elevated prices will be maintained until February 28, 2027, after which a review will take place.

Understanding the reasons behind the milk price hike, milk producers cite the ongoing increase in animal husbandry costs. Notably, the price of animal feed has surged by as much as 25 percent. The costs of feed items like grain, mustard, and gram flour, along with fodder and oil cake, have also escalated. Additionally, the rising prices of dairy animals have further added to producers’ expenses. The association emphasizes that due to these increasing production costs, raising the wholesale price of milk has become necessary.

Expenses will increase during the festive season. This increase in milk prices comes at a time when festive activities are about to intensify in Mumbai. Following Ganeshotsav, major festivals like Navratri and Diwali are coming. During these times, demand for milk and milk products increases.

The impact of the increase in wholesale milk prices may not be limited to households that purchase milk daily. It could also impact the cost of milk-based sweets, tea, yogurt , and other dairy products, although the final price of these products will depend on the costs and pricing of individual traders.

Over 3,000 sellers affected

This change is also significant for thousands of fresh milk vendors in Mumbai. The increase in wholesale milk prices will increase the procurement costs for retailers. The price at which they sell milk to customers will then depend on their local expenses and margins.
