Mid Day Meal: A stir occurred post-lunch at Government Secondary School in Singhana village, Indore, on Saturday, as 38 children suddenly felt unwell after being served curry and rice. Initially, three or four children complained of stomach pains, dizziness, and headaches, followed by others feeling dizzy too.

In response, the school promptly contacted families and transferred the children to Arvind Hospital in Indore for medical attention. Nineteen children were admitted and monitored for about seven hours, and all were discharged by 6:30 pm as their condition stabilized.

The issue arose after the children had their curry and rice meal around 1:30 pm. The swift onset of illness among the children raised concerns of possible food poisoning. However, medical examinations at the hospital did not reveal clear signs of food poisoning. Doctors confirmed that the children were no longer at risk. One girl had been running a fever for three days, while the other children seemed to be in good health.

Upon learning of the incident, the authorities and health department sprang into action. The Food and Drug Administration team visited the school, collected food samples, and sent them for testing to determine the cause of the children’s health issues.

The investigation team is scrutinizing the entire food preparation and serving process at the school, including quality checks and delivery to the children. This incident has reignited concerns about food quality in schools and monitoring systems, echoing previous incidents in the region.

Despite initial concerns, no evidence of food poisoning or other illnesses was found in the children during the investigation. Some children were taken to Aurobindo Hospital as a precaution and discharged after a thorough examination, confirming their good health status, says Dr. Madhav Prasad Hasani, Chief Medical and Health Officer.

Kajal Kewat mentioned that the curry served that day tasted off, causing dizziness. After informing the teacher, other students also began experiencing similar symptoms. Hemlata Chauhan shared that after eating curry and rice at school, some children vomited, while others felt unwell. She reported feeling lightheaded. The teachers promptly took them to the hospital, where they were later found to be fine.
