LPG Update: The month of October is fast approaching—a month people eagerly await, as it brings numerous festivals.
At the same time, several major changes will come into effect across the country starting October 1st. These include new regulations regarding LPG; specifically, the government is implementing new rules for domestic gas cylinders. Under these rules, biometric Aadhaar authentication has now been made mandatory.

Failure to complete this authentication could make it difficult to avail of the subsidy. Meanwhile, the Omar Abdullah-led government made a significant announcement in the Legislative Assembly, declaring that six LPG cylinders will now be provided free of cost annually in Jammu and Kashmir.

6 Free LPG Cylinders

Families covered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) will benefit from this government scheme. These families will receive six cylinders for free each year, while subsidy benefits will also be provided for any additional cylinders purchased. Satish Sharma, the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, made this announcement during the Assembly session on September 24th. This scheme is expected to provide direct financial relief to lakhs of poor families.

Benefits of the 6-LPG-Cylinder Scheme
According to available information, this scheme is exclusively for ‘Antyodaya Anna Yojana’ (AAY) ration cardholders in Jammu and Kashmir. These cards are issued to families from the poorest and most marginalised sections of society. The government will refund the cost of the cylinders directly into their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts in the form of a subsidy. State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also shared details of this decision on social media.

Uproar in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly
The issue also sparked a major commotion in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly. The BJP created a significant uproar in the House regarding this scheme. The opposition alleges that during the assembly elections, the National Conference had promised in its manifesto to provide 12 free LPG cylinders annually to ‘every family’ in Jammu and Kashmir.

However, this promise has not yet been fulfilled. Upon assuming power, the government reduced the number of cylinders from 12 to 6, whereas the election-time pledge had proposed extending the benefit to everyone. This issue led to a massive uproar in the House.

LPG Subsidy Benefit

Consumers who have already completed biometric Aadhaar authentication do not need to do so again. The government’s move aims to ensure that the benefits of subsidised cylinders reach eligible families. According to data released by the Ministry of Petroleum, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers across the country had completed their biometric Aadhaar authentication by September 19.
