LPG: Good news for common people. Government make big decision regarding LPG. The Central Government has almost completely lifted the restrictions on Non-Domestic Packed LPG supply imposed during the West Asia crisis . With this, hotels, restaurants, small industries, factories and other commercial consumers will now be able to get LPG as before. The government has announced that the supply of Non-Domestic Packed LPG has been restored to pre-crisis levels, while the supply of Bulk LPG has also been partially restored. This is expected to provide relief to thousands of commercial and industrial units that were facing gas supply shortages for the past few months.

Why were restrictions put in place?

Due to escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia and disruptions in the supply chain, the Indian government took steps to secure LPG availability for households, resulting in temporary limitations on LPG supply for commercial and industrial purposes. Under the Essential Commodities Act, the government directed the diversion of C3 and C4 hydrocarbon streams from petrochemical industries to LPG production to maintain a steady supply of domestic cooking gas and avoid inconvenience to the public.

Improvement in domestic LPG production

As the situation has improved, the government has started to lift these restrictions gradually. Domestic LPG production has increased, along with the availability of imported LPG cargoes. Consequently, the government has decided to fully normalize the supply of non-domestic packaged LPG and restore bulk LPG supplies to 50 percent of pre-crisis levels.

Re-allocation of C3-C4 streams

The government plans to re-assign C3-C4 streams to petrochemical and other essential industries while ensuring that domestic LPG availability remains unaffected and the country continues to produce a minimum of 40,000 metric tons of LPG daily. The Center for High Technology (CHT) has been tasked with developing new allocation strategies for various organizations and industries.

Focus on expanding PNG

Efforts will continue to be concentrated on expanding piped natural gas (PNG). Existing commercial and industrial consumers with PNG connections will retain their usage. In areas where PNG networks are accessible, LPG consumers will gradually transition to PNG, which is viewed as a safer, cleaner, and more sustainable solution.

Relief for industries and small businesses

This government initiative is anticipated to bring relief to industries, the hotel and restaurant sectors, and small enterprises. It reflects the government’s dedication to ensuring energy security while addressing the needs of industries. Future policies related to LPG supply and energy management could significantly contribute to bolstering the country’s economic activities.
