Iron Deficiency in Children – How It Affects Brain Development and Learning?

Iron Deficiency in Children – Many children work hard in their studies, but still lag behind their peers. Often, people question a child’s intelligence, which is unfair. Doctors say that poor dietary habits can play a significant role in this issue.

Today, fast food is extremely popular among children. Excessive consumption of fast food can lead to deficiencies in iron and other essential nutrients. Iron deficiency doesn’t just affect a child’s academic performance; it can also impact brain development.

Symptoms of Iron Deficiency in Children

Children with iron deficiency often feel tired and weak, experience low energy, and have difficulty concentrating. Their complexion may appear pale, and their hair and nails may become weak. A lack of appetite is also common.

How Iron Deficiency Affects Brain Development?

Reduced Focus and Concentration

Iron is essential for the production of neurotransmitters in the brain. Low iron levels can impair emotional and cognitive development, making it difficult for children to focus on their studies. They may get bored quickly, feel fatigued, or struggle with learning.

Persistent Fatigue

Children may feel tired even after waking up and may lack motivation to complete homework or participate in play activities.

Irritability and Mood Changes

Iron deficiency can also lead to irritability, frequent crying, or anger over minor issues. This may result in teacher complaints or conflicts with friends.

How to Overcome Iron Deficiency?

To address iron deficiency, make dietary changes. Replace fast food with iron-rich foods such as spinach, peanuts, and beets. Include fruits high in vitamin C, such as oranges, guava, and strawberries, which help with iron absorption.

If diet alone is insufficient, consult a doctor who may recommend iron supplements. Sprouted lentils and grains, such as ragi, are also excellent sources of iron and can be included in a child’s daily diet.
