ITR Filing Deadline Extension: For taxpayers, filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is crucial, though the standard deadline has passed. The government is now offering relief to companies. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadlines for filing tax audit reports and ITRs for the Assessment Year 2026-2027. The Board conveyed this information in a statement.

According to reports, companies can now file their income tax returns until November 21; the previous deadline was October 31. The deadline for submitting tax audit reports has been extended from September 30 to October 21. An additional 21 days have been granted in both instances.

Why is there a demand for this extension?

It is worth noting that tax practitioners had long been demanding an extension of the September 30 deadline. They argued that for taxpayers exempt from mandatory audits, the ITR filing deadline was August 31, leaving very little time to complete the audit process thereafter.

According to Amit Agarwal, Senior Partner at Nangia & Co. LLP, this decision demonstrates that the CBDT has acknowledged the genuine challenges faced by taxpayers and tax professionals. He noted that the extra 21 days would provide businesses with the time needed to complete audits and reconcile accounts, thereby ensuring the accuracy of the information provided in the returns and the verification of supporting documents.

Deadlines for other taxpayers
According to available information, the last date for salaried taxpayers to file their income tax returns was July 31. For those earning income from business or employment but who are not required to have their accounts audited, the deadline was August 31. The Income Tax Department has already stated that more than 7.8 crore income tax returns—a record number—had been filed by August 31 for the Assessment Year 2026-2027.
