ITR Filing 2026: The deadline for filing your income tax return (ITR) for the assessment year 2026-27 is just four days away, with July 31, 2026, fast approaching. Tax experts recommend that you file your return as soon as possible to avoid the last-minute rush, which could lead to server issues or technical problems on the e-filing portal.
As of July 26, 2026, over 41 million ITRs have already been submitted, with e-verification completed for 38.5 million of them. If you miss the July 31 deadline, you can still file a belated ITR until December 31, 2026, but be aware that doing so may incur significant penalties, interest, and the loss of various tax benefits.

If you file your return late, penalties will apply under section 234F of the Income Tax Act. For those with an income exceeding Rs 5 lakh, the penalty is Rs 5,000, while individuals with an income up to Rs 5 lakh will face a fee of Rs 1,000. If your income falls below the basic exemption limit and filing was not mandatory, no late fee will be charged.
Additionally, if you owe any tax by the July 31 deadline, interest will accrue at a rate of 1% per month under Section 234A until you file your return and pay the outstanding amount. One of the most significant drawbacks of missing the deadline is the inability to carry forward any capital gains or business losses, which could impact your tax situation in future years.
A delay in receiving your tax refund can occur if your TDS has been over-deducted and you file your return late. To ensure a quicker refund, it’s important to file and verify your return as soon as possible, as this will expedite the process of crediting the refund to your bank account.
Different deadlines apply to various taxpayers: salaried employees and those filing ITR-1 and ITR-2, along with individuals with long-term capital gains up to Rs 1.25 lakh, must file by July 31, 2026. Business professionals and those whose accounts don’t require a tax audit have until August 31, 2026, while the last date for tax audits is September 30, 2026. Finally, taxpayers whose accounts need to be audited must submit their returns by October 31, 2026.
