ITR Filing 2026 Update: For the Assessment Year (AY) 2026-27, taxpayers must now include a secondary communication address when submitting their income tax returns. The Income Tax Department has introduced a mandatory secondary address section in all ITR forms from ITR-1 to ITR-7.

This alteration is a notable change in this year’s filing procedure. Although the specific rationale behind this requirement has not been disclosed by the Income Tax Department, experts suggest it aligns with the government’s aim to maintain comprehensive taxpayer records and enhance communication.

Key Points to Note:

1. Taxpayers will now have visibility of their foreign assets.
2. The Annual Information Return (AIS) from the Income Tax Department will now exhibit details concerning taxpayers’ foreign assets and income obtained through the Automatic Exchange of Information (AEOI) system. The AIS currently displays information for the years 2022, 2023, and 2024, with data for 2025 to be included after its receipt in September or October 2026. India receives financial data about its taxpayers from over 100 partner jurisdictions through various international agreements, covering details like foreign bank accounts, financial investments, interest, dividends, and other income.

3. Previously, taxpayers could access domestic financial details associated with their PAN through AIS on the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal. This serves as a centralized source for information on interest income, dividends, securities transactions, mutual fund investments, and property transactions. Notifications via text messages and emails are being dispatched to taxpayers to inform them about this service and to ensure accurate disclosure of foreign assets and income during ITR filing.

4. Deadline Extension: Taxpayers now have until August 31st to submit their returns by logging into the e-filing portal with their user ID and password. The initial deadline of July 31st was extended by one month. The filing process involves several steps, including portal registration using Aadhaar, PAN, and other details. Users can access the website https://www.incometax.gov.in/ with their user ID and password to file their returns. Additionally, e-verification of returns must be completed within 30 days after filing to validate the returns.
