Deadline Extension

Taxpayers filing ITR-1 or ITR-2 (pertaining to salary, pension, and capital gains) now have until July 31, 2026, to submit their returns. For taxpayers using ITR-3 or ITR-4, like those involved in business activities, the deadline has been pushed to August 31, 2026. This extension aims to provide small businesses with more time for filing their returns.

Despite this extension, the deadline for tax audit cases remains October 31, 2026. Taxpayers must furnish their audit reports by September 30, 2026. Beginning this year, the deadline for filing revised returns has been prolonged to March 31, 2027, from the prior deadline of December 31. This extension will enable taxpayers to rectify errors within a more extended timeframe. It is essential to keep in mind that Section 234F imposes penalties for late filing, leading to potential delays in the refund process and loss of interest.

Who is getting exemption from July 31?

Under the Income Tax Act, certain individuals are exempt from the July 31 deadline. These include freelancers, consultants, doctors, lawyers, small proprietors, and partners. Their income is counted as business or professional income. If these taxpayers’ accounts do not require auditing, they are given time until August 31 to file their ITR instead of July 31.

However, professionals or businessmen whose accounts require auditing are given time until October 31 to file their ITR, but their audit report must be prepared by September 30. In some cases, the ITR filing deadline may extend to November 30.
